I don’t think either image can trump the other. As Sellars argues, they need to be constantly reconciled, in a dynamic process of philosophical investigation.

Consider just a simple example where the scientific image bests the manifest one: it appears to us that the Sun raises and sets. It doesn’t, science tells us that it’s the Earth that rotates.
